Timothy Appnel
Timothy Appnel is a professional Internet technology developer and author with 18 years of corporate IT and Internet systems development experience. He is the principal and founder of The Appnel Group, a professional services consultancy with a solid record of building social media systems and web applications using Movable Type and Amazon Web Services.
In the early days of the Internet's explosive commercial growth, Tim worked for prominent Internet consulting firm AGENCY.COM. During his 5 year tenure, he held positions as Technical Project Manager and Architect for clients such as MetLife and Texaco, and as North American Mobile Practice Leader and Director of Technology in both Global Marketing and the Applied Concepts Lab groups.
During this time Tim gave interviews to numerous publications including Internet World, CRN and M-Business and presented at conferences such as JavaOne, XML DevCon Europe, and Wireless Internet World. He was the author of AGENCY.COM's technology position papers including their trademarked Flexitecture Methodology -- an early blueprint for building agile systems using XML, open services and basic object oriented principles applied on a network-wide level.
Tim has been an active member of the Movable Type (MT) community since version 1.2 (December 2001) when he spearheaded the development of a corporate weblog for AGENCY's Applied Concepts Lab. Since that time he has launched dozens of sites powered by Movable Type and TypePad for companies such as O'Reilly Media, Standard & Poors, and Union Square Ventures.
He has also developed numerous free and commercial MT plugins and was an award winner of Six Apart's Plugin Developer's Contest 2004. Tim was also the initial author of the new manual for Movable Type that debuted with the release of version 3.2.
Tim is an active contributor to the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN), the global open source repository of code for the programming language.
In addition to being a technologist, Tim also has a background in amateur publications, which include co-founding Oculus Magazine, a free indie music and arts fanzine, in 1991 and managing it for over seven years.
He is an occasional contributor to the O'Reilly Network. His personal weblog can be found at http://www.timaoutloud.org/.
