"Getting Cute" Defined
“Getting cute” is a phrase I sometimes use when commenting on development or architecture of software systems. Here is my best attempt to define it in more formal terms.
Applied to coding, “getting cute” is when a developer or company employs a hack or complicated solution to a problem where a simpler more straight-forward, perhaps even existing, solution seems like it would have sufficed. The phrase is sarcastic in nature and generally should be regarded as a mild criticism. This validity of its application is conjecture and is always relative to the speaker’s experience.
